The term "Ashtanga" is derived from Sanskrit, with "Ashta" meaning eight and "Anga" referring to limb or body part. Thus, Ashtanga represents the integration of the eight limbs of yoga into a comprehensive system. Unlike other styles such as Hatha and Vinyasa, which are more fluid and improvisational, Ashtanga follows a predetermined sequence of asanas.

Considered one of the oldest forms of yoga, Ashtanga is outlined in Patanjali’s yoga sutras. Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga encompasses asana (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation (dharana and dhyana), bliss (samadhi), and ethical codes of conduct (yama and niyama). It offers a structured approach to yoga, guiding practitioners through a specific sequence of poses in a systematic manner, from beginning to end.

This is Primary Series or Beginners Level. The Sanskrit name for the Ashtanga Primary Series is Yoga Chikitsa, which translates to "yoga therapy." This series is designed to purify and heat the body and serves as the foundation for all subsequent series, comprising 41 asanas.
